Transitioning to Primary

Building Partnerships for Educational Continuity

When children reach their 6th birthday they will move on from Titoki to their next stage in learning.

Titoki Montessori has a very good relationship and partnership with a number of local schools on the North Shore. For years, our 6 year olds have transitioned very well from the Casa environment into primary school life. The local schools have happily received our students and come to value, understand and respect the 3-year cycle at Titoki.

Some of these local primary schools are listed below:

  • Glamorgan
  • Meraki Montessori
  • Murrays Bay
  • Sherwood
  • Torbay
  • Long Bay
  • Kristin
  • City Impact

Occasionally some of our parents, as their children approach the age of 5, question whether they should pull their child out of Titoki a year early to start primary school at the same time as many other children.

The Value of the Third Year at Titoki Montessori School

Children who have completed their 3 years at Titoki Montessori School are more than ready to transition to primary schools as evidenced by the many testimonials of parents and feedback from the leaders of both mainstream and Montessori primary schools that our children have joined over the years. A common feedback from leaders of primary schools is that our 6 year olds are treated as having completed a year in school with the level of literacy and numeracy they have learnt at Titoki. They transition to primary school as happy and confident learners who have “learnt how to learn” and are able to complete their tasks with focus and concentration. Many of our 6 year olds are ready to go straight to Year 2 in public and private primary schools with their similar aged counterparts; given the holistic skills they have learnt during their 3 years at Titoki Montessori.

In contrast to new entrant classes in primary schools focusing on “play-based” learning, the final year at Titoki is when our 5 year olds reach the apex of their learning and are able to lead and inspire their younger peers. The third year at Titoki Casa provides a rare opportunity for 5 year olds to naturally develop leadership skills and a sense of confidence as they guide their younger peers in the many areas of the Montessori curriculum that they have mastered over their years at Titoki Casa since the age of 3.

A Strong Foundation for Lifelong Learning

Maria Montessori saw education as "an aid to life". So the skills your children acquire at Titoki Montessori will not only help with their transition to primary school but will prepare them for a life-long love of learning.

Maria Montessori’s observations more than a century ago were spot-on! The 3 year cycle at Titoki Montessori will provide your child with the best start and foundation to a journey of life-long learning which they will pursue with confidence and joy!

Montessori Testimonials

"The best and most authentic Montessori preschool in Auckland! Both my children went to this school for the full 3 years and they absolutely thrived. Although they are both at school now, they still talk about Titoki frequently and go visit. I can't imagine a better start to their educational journey. All the staff are extremely knowledgeable in Montessori philosophy and do a fantastic job delivering an authentic programme. As a Montessori teacher myself, I am truly grateful for the level of care, effort and education Titoki provides. Children acquire skills for life at this preschool! As my 6 year old said "Titoki is the best school ever!""

"Our son has recently graduated from Titoki Montessori. He absolutely loved his time there and we are very glad that we chose this preschool. At Titoki they follow a very authentic Montessori approach which values the whole child. The environment is fully prepared to suit the children’s needs, making child-led learning a really enjoyable experience for these pre-schoolers. The staff are absolutely wonderful, very nurturing and supportive and there is a great community vibe to the school. Our son left very well prepared for starting Primary School. We are so lucky to have such a high quality, authentic Montessori option right here in Torbay."
